2016-17 Season Launch

VIRTUOSI CONCERTS 2016-2017

SEASON LAUNCH

Dear friends,

“Music hath charms…”, so the saying goes, “to soothe and to educate the soul” – not so much “to attain virtue”, as Plato thought, but rather to allow us to perceive a spiritual sense of the truth, which is perhaps what Plato meant. This is music at its most profound which we experience, perhaps most often, when we listen to Johann Sebastian Bach.

VIRTUOSI CONCERTS brings you a new season filled with the music of Bach – as never before!

Pianists Peter Vinograde and Angela Hewitt will perform three Bach Partitas; Madeline Hildebrand will play both a Bach Keyboard Concerto and a Brandenburg Concerto with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra String Ensemble and guest flutist Haley Marie. (Click the performers’ names to link to their websites.)

The Flûte Alors! Recorder Ensemble has prepared a special program called Bach to the Future. And the great English cellist Colin Carr brings us a rare performance of Bach’s Gamba Sonata in G major played with his regular concert and recording partner, Thomas Sauer, at the piano.

BEYOND BACH: Our audience has learned that such a seeming specialization on Virtuosi Concerts is subtly embedded within a diversity of music, composers and International Virtuosi. We will bring you a variety of ensembles including a piano trio and a clarinet trio – the Horszowski Trio (piano) and the Zodiac Trio (clarinet) – as well as two string quartets – the Cecilia String Quartet and the Dalí Quartet. Canada’s Cecilia String Quartet brings us a new work by Katarina Curcin. The Dalí Quartet will perform several Latin American composers, ranging from the familiar Piazzolla to the exciting and passionate Ginastera.

Other musical highlights beyond Bach include two of Franz Schubert’s greatest chamber works – the Trout Quintet and the Death and the Maiden String Quartet – not to be missed.

We must not leave out sublime works by Beethoven and Brahms in this overview. From Beethoven, we have The Tempest piano sonata (Vinograde), the Piano Trio Op 1, No. 2 (Horszowski), and the second Cello Sonata as well as Variations from The Magic Flute (Carr). From Brahms we have a violin sonata (Zodiac), and a cello sonata (Carr).

BEYOND SUBSCRIPTION: Virtuosi Concerts takes advantage of a rare opportunity to bring pianist Janina Fialkowska back to our stage. Her last solo recital with us (2004) was so sold out that we were forced to sell STANDING ROOM ONLY tickets in the gallery!

Order your tickets to see Janina early. Virtuosi subscribers receive a discount and priority seating to her all-Chopin recital.
