August 2015 – Harry’s Summer High Note

Dear friends,

My wife, Kathy, and I are stretching out our 50th wedding anniversary celebrations from June all the way through to September 5th (the actual date). We got all our family with 2 little grandchildren together for a week in June at a cottage at Grand Beach. Then we discovered quite accidentally that the Dover String Quartet, winner of all the prizes at the last Banff International String Quartet Competition, was performing in Banff in July, so we used that as an excuse to return to one of our favourite places on the planet. It was only a weekend, but it felt like a 2-week holiday.

I’m writing to you to report that the Dover performance was heartstopping — technically, virtuosically, musically and emotionally. With another cellist they played the Schubert string quintet. They made it sound so new and fresh. All the young music students studying at Banff were stunned. Their international masterclass teachers had similar strong reactions and felt that the Dovers were headed rapidly into the string quartet stratosphere.  At their young age, the Dovers are already getting recognized as one of the best string quartets in the world!

In a frenzy of enthusiasm, I immediately contacted their agent and did something almost unheard-of — I pre-emptively re-engaged the Dovers for a future season, even though we have yet to experience their Virtuosi Concerts debut on October 17, 2015! How else would we be able to afford them once they are in hot demand?!!

Kathy and I also attended several masterclasses featuring brilliant teen-age virtuosi from around the world. It was a thrilling weekend.

The next High Note celebrating the opening night launch of the 25th anniversary season with the Hermitage Piano Trio will be sent out to you in September.

Have a wonderful summer!
